Recording cricket matches from the umpire’s point of view can be a game-changer, offering a unique perspective of the action that is difficult to replicate from other camera angles. There are several benefits to recording from this viewpoint, including reviewing decisions and minimising disputes between players and umpires. There are a few ways to record cricket matches from the umpire’s point of view. One approach is to simply hand the umpire the phone and instruct them to point it at the batter. The umpire can control the recordings and enter ball information themselves, or you can use Remote Recording so someone else can manage the phone while the umpire focuses on umpiring.
When the bowler is ready to run in, the umpire should hold the phone as steady as possible in portrait orientation. It’s not recommended to follow the ball with the camera because the video can become jerky and unpleasant to watch. It’s important to note that for safety reasons, the umpire should not look at the phone at any point while the ball is live.
Recording from the umpire’s point of view by holding the phone may require some practice. Another drawback of this method is that it only allows the umpire to have one free hand. This can be inconvenient when players what them to hold various items such as hats, jerseys, or sunglasses.
Alternatively, you can attach the phone to the umpire using a phone chest mount, which allows the umpire to move freely without worrying about holding the phone. With the chest mount, the phone can be controlled remotely, allowing someone else to manage the recording while the umpire focuses on the game. However, the umpire may need to check periodically to ensure the phone is pointing in the right direction. Recording in landscape orientation is easier with a chest mount and provides a wider field of view.
