Recording from the stumps offers a unique and compelling perspective that provides the optimal view to review LBW decisions. The concept behind this technique is simple: attach your phone to the bowler’s end stumps by screwing magnets to the back of middle stump and attaching the camera to peer between them. To achieve the best view, position the camera through the right side of the middle stump when the bowler is on the left side of the stumps, and through the left side when the bowler is on the right. This will help avoid obstructions caused by the bowler’s follow-through, ensuring a clear view of the action. Use Remote Recording to control the phone. Move the phone to the other end at the end of each over.

Although it may seem like recording from the stumps is a risky method that could put the safety of your phone in danger, the risk is not as high as you might think. The phone is protected from a direct impact from the batter sending the ball towards it because it is positioned behind the stumps, which will take the majority of the force of the impact. If the phone falls, it will only fall a short distance to the ground. The bigger risk comes from a direct throw from a fielder behind the bowler. To minimize this risk, the use of a heavy-duty protective phone case is highly recommended.

In six 50-over club cricket trial matches, the bowler’s end stumps were hit hard by the batter only twice and by fielders six times. There were zero direct hits on the phone and the phone was completely unharmed. The phone is a small target relative to the stumps, and as such the risk of damage from a direct hit is quite low. So, while it is important to take precautions and protect your phone, recording from the stumps can be a low risk and effective way to capture unique footage of the game.
